Celebrating Reading Month!

Our Fourth Grade Buddies from Mrs. Clay's classroom were able to come visit  this week!  Each child paired up with their buddy to listen and help them read a Spring or Fairytale story.  After reading together, our buddies helped our students fill out a book story map.  Our reading theme is "Reading Takes You Places!"  On the story map, each child had to share where the story and characters took them.

Our Library helper, Mrs. C., surprised the students with an extra special Easter surprise!  After reading an Easter Bunny story during library, she gave our class hand-made oragami bunnies.  Thank you Mrs. C!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

We have had an exciting week celebrating St. Patrick's Day! Here are a few of the activities below:

Working on our Leprechaun Puppets with our Boulan Buddies!

A Math Graphing Activity using Lucky Charms! They're magically delicious!

What happened to our room?!?!  Mickey and Patrick, the Leprechauns, visited our room and took us on a Scavenger hunt.

Look! We found treasure, but the Leprechauns were too quick for us! Maybe we'll find them next year!

Will Ryan LaTarte

Hello there families!  I hope everyone is doing well!  I wanted to thank you for all of the nice emails and well wishes that I have received since delivering our little boy.  Today I even received a little package with cards that your kiddos had made for me.  I loved seeing their little drawings and then seeing pictures of all of the fun they are having on the blog.   We are loving our little guy Will and feel very blessed.  We brought him home from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon and are getting used to being parents!  Here are a few pictures for you!  I miss all of the kiddos, please tell them I said hello and give them a hug from me.  Maybe when he is a bit older I can stop by so the kiddos can meet him.  Take care everyone!

Boulan Buddies & the Three Little Pigs!

Our Boulan Buddies from the middle school come to visit our classroom nearly every Tuesday.  This week, I was able to set up a rotation of educational games for the Kindergarten students to complete with their buddies.  Each Boulan buddy was able to explain and assist the children with the activities, giving our buddies the chance to practice their leadership skills too!  The games ranged from Sight Word Bingo to Counting out Money using our classroom play money.

We also begin a fairy tale unit this week, beginning with The Three Little Pigs. There are several different versions of the story, varying from the original to those told from the Wolf’s perspective as well as the complete opposite books such as The Three Little Wolves and the Big, Bad Pig  Students had the opportunity to hear several versions of this fairy tale, which helped when making connections through our activities.  Each child made finger puppets, a cover page illustration for the story during Computers, a Three Little Pigs story map, and even wrote a letter to Mr. Wolf!   Here are some pictures of students acting out our story with the help of Character Masks during our week:

March Is Reading Month!

Hello Parents! The students and myself have had a wonderful first week together.  With our celebration of Leap Year as well as Dr. Seuss' birthday, it was a fun and exciting week!  It has been a pleasure meeting a few parents throughout the week.  I look forward to meeting you all in two weeks at Parent-Teacher Conferences. I will be continuing the classroom blog posts while Mrs. Latarte is away, keeping you updated with the experiences happening inside the classroom.

The month of March brings our many wonderful reading celebrations during March is Reading Month!  Our school-wide theme at Bemis is "Reading Can Take You Anywhere!"  You will notice a few new bulletin boards in our Kindergarten Hallway that showcase student work about reading and favorite books; if you have not had the chance to see them, please stop by for a look! Today, on Dr. Seuss' Birthday, we kicked off the month by reading several books by this silly, but well-loved, author.  Students were suprised with another Mystery Reader this morning, Mr. Cueny, who brought in And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street... by Dr. Seuss.  This book fit in perfectly today as this was Dr. Seuss' first book! Our class also read Hop on Pop, as review for our rhyming activity, as well as One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish! and ate blue jello with red fish in it's honor!  We made Cat in the Hat Masks in the afternoon and, of course, took time to snuggle up and read our own books too!  Below are some pictures from our day.  As we begin our celebration of Reading, students were reminded today  that it is OK to be silly and to let their imaginations soar, visiting both near and far off places. Encourage your child to keep reading this month!  As Dr. Seuss would say,
"And now, Good night. It is time to sleep
So we will sleep with our pet Zeep.
Today is gone. Today was fun.
          Tomorrow is another one.
Every day, from here to there.
          funny things are everywhere!"
